OUR HISTORY

THE EARLY YEARS

Overcoming Church of God, Inc. was established in 1960 under the leadership of the late Bishop E. A. Green at 6 South Bridge Street in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Elder Green as he was then called was called of God. Bishop Green did not hesitate to answer and willingly stood in the gap as the shepherd of the small flock which God had entrusted in his care. He stepped out in faith and the church began to multiply. Bishop Green was called home to be with the Lord in 1967and Elder George C. Ridgill became the pastor of the church and the church was renamed Green Chapel Overcoming Church of God in honor of our founder and bishop. During the 1970 the church moved to 123 Cottage Street due to renovations in downtown Poughkeepsie. Under the leadership of Elder Ridgill along with his wife, Mother Gladys Ridgill the church began to flourish tremendously and the church purchased the Poughkeepsie Evangelistic Deliverance Center on 39 South Bridge Street.

1980-2002

Green Chapel was now "ONE CHURCH in TWO LOCATIONS". Being comissioned by the Lord Elder Ridgill started another work in the city of Kingston, New York, and Green Chapel Overcoming Church of God was now "ONE CHURCH in THREE LOCATIONS".

Elder George C. Ridgill was consecrated as Bishop in the Overcoming Church of God of America, Inc. and appointed as the District Bishop of the New York District by the late Presiding Bishop W. J. Thompson. The Overcoming Church of God, Inc. in the State of New York had locations in Peeksill, Nyack, Yonkers, Spring Valley, Kingston and Poughkeepsie. On May 30, 2002 our Presiding Prelate and Pastor, Bishop George Charles Ridgill fell asleep in the Lord. He served as State Bishop for 15 years and pastor for 35 years.

2002-Present

Elder Frances L. Bunn was installed as our new pastor by Presiding Bishop N. K. Allen, Sr. and the Board of Bishops of the Overcoming Church of God, Inc. Under the leadership of Elder Bunn the church has went under many renovations and were still not finished, God is still blessing. The Green Chapel OCOG has experienced its fair share of transitional struggles since the death of our pioneer pastor and Bishop. It has not been easy to move forward in the absence of such a dynamic leader.
